During my teenage years, shopping was never a pleasant experience for me. Athleta Stores rarely had my size in stock, leaving me feeling excluded as my friends tried on various cute clothes. While there were stores dedicated to plus sizes, it didn't compare to shopping in mainstream stores with my peers.

Thankfully, in recent years, many brands have made strides towards being more size-inclusive, especially in the fitness industry. Retailers like Lululemon and Athleta now offer plus sizes to cater to customers of all body types, shapes, and sizes, including myself.

In 2017, Athleta introduced extended sizing from XXS to 3X for hundreds of its styles both in-store and online. By March 2021, the brand had expanded its plus-size offerings to over 500 styles, which make up 70% of the spring collection. Having already enjoyed Lululemon's plus-sized workout gear, I was eager to see if Athleta's offerings would meet expectations.

After trying out some plus-size pieces from Athleta during various activities, such as exercising and running errands, I found the Advance Bra ($69) and the Elation 7/8 Tight ($89) to be potential new favorites. Here's my take on what I appreciate and what I find lacking in Athleta's latest plus-size options.

To begin with, Athleta offers an extensive range of clothing options in "extended sizing." From my personal experience, it's rare for plus-sized shoppers to find such a wide selection, so I was thrilled to have so many choices. I decided to try out Athleta's popular Advance Bra in a delicate baby pink shade. When I put it on, I was delighted by its exceptional comfort and the level of support it provided. Unlike most sports bras, which often result in spillage regardless of the size, this bra—purchased in my usual size, 40D—offered ample coverage. Whether I'm engaging in cardio exercises or lifting weights, the Advance Bra securely holds everything in place without excessive bouncing. What's even better is that the straps don't dig into my shoulders or cause any discomfort on my back.

Now, let's talk about the Elation 7/8 Tights, which have garnered nearly 4,000 reviews on Athleta's website. Initially, I was skeptical when they arrived. At first glance, I doubted they would fit me. I ordered them in a size 2X, which is my usual size, but they appeared quite small and lacking stretch.

However, when I tried them on, I was won over by the sleek black leggings. Above all, I appreciate the powerful compression they provide, particularly around my backside, which I'm self-conscious about as it tends to move around during exercise. When wearing these leggings, I don't experience any uncomfortable jiggling while using the elliptical or running on the treadmill. The material is completely opaque, allowing me to confidently perform squats, deadlifts, and lunges without worrying about any wardrobe malfunctions.

The waistband of these leggings is truly exceptional—it's what convinced me to keep them. Throughout my 30-minute cardio session, the Elation 7/8 Tights stayed in place without slipping down even once. I couldn't believe it!

What I don’t like about Athleta’s plus-size workout clothes

Although I appreciate the comfort of both the Advance Bra and Elation 7/8 Tight, I was rather dissatisfied with their drying time. Both garments are composed of a nylon and lycra blend that supposedly wicks away sweat and dries rapidly. Let me clarify, I don't expect my clothes to be completely moisture-free after exercising since I do sweat, but the Athleta pieces remained unusually damp for up to an hour after I finished my workout. I noticed that the leggings dried slightly faster than the bra, but the difference was minimal.

Are Athleta’s plus-size clothes worth buying?

I would definitely purchase more items from Athleta. The Advance Bra has been a game-changer for me in terms of finding a supportive sports bra. It keeps everything in place no matter what activity I'm engaged in, providing comfort and coverage. The fabric of both the bra and leggings offers the perfect amount of compression and feels incredibly soft against the skin. Athleta's range of plus sizes in various styles and colors ensures there's something for everyone's preferences.

While the price point of $69 for the bra and $89 for the leggings may be higher compared to T.J.Maxx, it's in line with other premium activewear brands like Lululemon. The quality of Athleta's pieces justifies the slightly higher cost, as they truly make exercising a more enjoyable experience. Personally, I still lean towards Lululemon's Wunder Under leggings due to their breathability, flexibility, and stretchiness, despite my appreciation for Athleta's thick waistband.
