Crocs have made a notable return. I recall the time when Crocs gained popularity in the late 2000s. Similar to UGG boots, Crocs sparked mixed reactions right away, with more critics than fans.
While some individuals swore by their Crocs, the majority, myself included, failed to see the appeal. They were large, peculiar clogs that resembled a strange mix of sandals and water shoes.
After a few years, the controversy subsided, and Crocs faded from our collective memory.
Fast forward over a decade since their initial rise to fame, and Crocs are officially back, thanks to the pandemic. They met the growing demand for comfortable and versatile indoor footwear. Additionally, people became less concerned about their attire due to lockdowns.
However, the question remains - are these peculiar foam clogs truly worth it, or are they just another passing trend?
This has been on my mind for the past few weeks as I've been sporting my own pair of Crocs. I've worn them extensively in various conditions, and in this candid review, I'll share my insights on these divisive shoes.
CROCS: THE BRAND
Not many people are familiar with the actual brand behind the classic clogs produced by Crocs, so here's a brief introduction. Crocs was established in the early 2000s with the aim of creating a foam boat shoe.
However, they soon developed the iconic clog that we all recognize today. Shortly after its inception, Crocs acquired the rights to Croslite, a unique foam resin that conforms to the wearer's feet like memory foam and provides additional benefits such as shock absorption.
The unconventional design of Crocs quickly gained attention in the media, being labeled as "the world's ugliest shoe" and even referred to as "a plastic hoof" by Tim Gunn.
Surprisingly, prominent figures like George W. Bush and Michelle Obama were spotted wearing them, sparking controversy and making Crocs a topic of discussion in the shoe industry.
However, as time passed, the debates surrounding Crocs have largely subsided. In fact, Crocs seem to be more popular than ever before. Celebrities like Justin Bieber and Post Malone have their own versions, and there has even been a collaboration with Kentucky Fried Chicken. Whether you love them or hate them, it appears that Crocs are here to stay.
There’s only one question left: are they actually good shoes?
CROCS OVERVIEW
I experimented with the classic unisex clog in the chocolate colorway. Typically, I wear a size 10.5, but since Crocs doesn't offer half sizes, I opted for a size 10, and I'm happy with that decision. According to the sources I consulted, the clogs have a more spacious fit, and I can confirm that is indeed the case.
Upon receiving the clogs, I was delighted with the color choice. Crocs offers some daring color options, so I was concerned that the chocolate shade might be overwhelming. However, it turned out to be a fantastic neutral option that complements a variety of outfits.
One advantage of these shoes' Croslite foam construction is that there is no need for a break-in period. They mold to your feet instantly.
Although the foam is soft, it also provides a surprising level of stiffness, offering substantial support. They feel much more supportive compared to many flat-bottomed shoes like Vans or Converse.
While they offer support, it may take some time to get accustomed to the actual shape of the clogs. As mentioned earlier, they feel quite spacious on the feet. Crocs' famous "Swiss-cheese holes" further accentuate this roomy fit by promoting airflow.
Additionally, the footbed features several ridges of small bumps that roughly conform to the foot's shape. These bumps provide extra grip, but you can easily feel them while walking or standing, especially when wearing thin socks or going barefoot. Some individuals might find this sensation slightly unpleasant.
CROCS RELAXED MODE VS. SPORT MODE
As you may be aware, there are two options for wearing the heel straps of Crocs. You can either place the strap across the top of your foot or wrap it around the back.
When the straps are positioned on top, you will experience the traditional feeling of wearing clogs. In this relaxed configuration, you can effortlessly slide the Crocs on and off, similar to sandals.
On the other hand, when the straps are secured around the back, you gain extra stability, making it nearly impossible for the clogs to slip off. This particular setup, known as "sport mode," is ideal for engaging in high-energy activities.
Having these two strap modes is undeniably advantageous. Personally, I tend to default to sport mode due to the added security it offers. However, if I only plan on wearing them briefly, I opt for relaxed mode.
SHOULD YOU WEAR SOCKS WITH CROCS?
There is an important matter that has not been discussed yet, and that is the matter of socks.
Many individuals strongly dislike the appearance of socks with sandals, so it is assumed that socks with Crocs would have a similar effect, correct? However, wouldn't going barefoot be too uncomfortable?
Ultimately, the decision varies depending on the type of sock and the activity you intend to engage in. If you plan on wearing Crocs for an extended period of time, then wearing socks is recommended.
Low-cut socks in a neutral or matching color are a good choice as they blend well and do not stand out too much. It may be challenging to find a suitable color for every pair of Crocs, so sticking to neutral or earth tones is likely the best option.
CROCS: A REAL LIFE REVIEW
Now, let’s get to the review.
CROCS AS HOUSE SHOES
Crocs have always been a favorite choice for me, as well as for numerous individuals, due to their simplicity as comfortable indoor footwear that can be effortlessly worn for running errands or outdoor activities.
I am delighted to affirm that they fulfill this purpose exceptionally well. It is truly convenient to effortlessly slip them on when I am in a relaxed state, whether it's for taking out the trash or simply checking the mail.
While one could opt for sandals or worn-out sneakers to accomplish the same tasks, there are a few distinct advantages that come with choosing Crocs.
