I have always prioritized obtaining ample sleep, but with the responsibility of caring for my one-year-old, any assistance in maximizing the limited rest I receive is invaluable. Consequently, upon learning about Eight Sleep's latest iteration of their intelligent mattress topper, which boasts enhanced sleep tracking and temperature regulation features, I became intrigued to witness its efficacy. Despite the Pod 3 Cover's steep price, after several months of rigorous testing, reverting to a conventional standalone mattress is now inconceivable.

The Eight Sleep system

The company's primary products comprise of two key elements: The Pod 3 Mattress and the Pod 3 Cover. The mattress itself is characterized by a moderate firmness level, slightly firmer than the original Leesa mattress, and incorporates multiple supplementary layers to enhance heat dispersion.

Pros

  1. More sensitive sleep tracking
  2. WiFi now supports 5Ghz networks
  3. Powerful heating and cooli ng
  4. Easy-to-use app

Cons

  1. Pricey
  2. Autopilot and Data Insight features require 8+ Pro subscription

The Eight Sleep Pod 3 cover serves as the central component of the company's comprehensive strategy. It incorporates an innovative feature known as the Active Grid, a system of embedded tubing that transports either cool or warm water to your side of the bed, ensuring an optimal sleep temperature. The Active Grid is equipped with sensors that can monitor various aspects of your sleep, including heart rate, respiratory rate, and movement patterns.

Eight Sleep asserts that the Pod 3 provides significantly more precise tracking capabilities compared to its previous iterations. Additionally, the Hub, which is connected to the Active Grid, functions as a reservoir for the water in the Pod Cover and houses essential technologies such as WiFi. Notably, the Hub now supports 5GHz networks, distinguishing it from earlier models.

Setup

Getting your bed set up might seem daunting at first, but it's actually a breeze. Eight Sleep's foam mattress arrives compressed in a box, so all you need to do is remove the plastic wrapper and let it expand for a few minutes. Plus, you don't even need to purchase their mattress - the Pod Cover is compatible with any mattress up to 16 inches thick.

The standard Pod Cover is designed with zippers that align perfectly with the company's mattress, ensuring a seamless fit. However, for those who prefer to use a third-party bed, the Pod Cover with PerfectFit is available. This version includes an encasement that can accommodate different types of beds, allowing users to keep their current mattress without the need for replacement. This not only reduces the cost of acquiring the Pod Cover but also provides a greater level of flexibility for customers.

Attaching the Pod Cover to your mattress is a straightforward process. Eight Sleep's app provides clear and concise step-by-step instructions on how to connect the hose, fill the reservoir, and power it up. While there is minimal room for error, such as ensuring there is enough space behind the bed to prevent the hose from kinking, the provided guide eliminates any guesswork.

Additionally, although the hub itself occupies some space, the length of the hose makes it relatively easy to find a suitable spot for it. Once the setup is complete, users can proceed to set up or log into their account, enter their WiFi information, and they are good to go. Overall, assembling everything after unboxing took me less than 20 minutes.

Considering the starting price of $2,045 for a full-size Pod Cover, it is evident that this product is not inexpensive. However, the ability to retain your existing mattress and the convenience of the setup process make it a worthwhile investment.

Comfort

All the advanced technology in the world is rendered insignificant if the product is uncomfortable, but fortunately, this is not the case with the Pod 3. In fact, it is quite the opposite. One drawback of the original Pod Cover was the noticeable presence of the tubing inside.

However, with the Pod 3, the tubing is barely discernible when you lay on it; you can only feel it when you touch it with your hands. It must be acknowledged that the topper does add a slight firmness to the mattress, but apart from that, it provides a similar sensation to a bed with a thin foam egg crate pad – just with a slightly cushioned feel.

Wrap-up

The impact of the Pod 3 Cover on my sleep was evident when I missed it during my travels. Despite the comfort of hotel beds, the absence of temperature controls was noticeable. The upgraded WiFi and precise sleep tracking features of the smart topper make it even more convenient to use.

However, the starting price of over $2,100 may be a significant drawback for most people, and the optional 8+ Pro subscription may seem like an unnecessary expense to access all features. Nevertheless, the Pod 3 Cover has provided me with some of the most restful sleep experiences, even without Autopilot and Sleep Insights.
